ABOUT
Hey. I’m Jono.
You may know me from my work with Adult Swim’s digital programs Dear Jono and Stupid Morning Bullshit. In addition to showrunning, my work includes production of nearly 30 short films, three webseries, and the award-winning feature film Pageant Material. Working alongside incredible Atlanta talent, I’ve tried to exercise an empathetic style of filmmaking that challenges the viewer to explore the complexities of stories often relegated to two-dimensionality in mainstream media. By creating characters with specific, strong, and diverse emotional perspectives, I works to foster opportunities for audiences to better understand and connect to underrepresented voices in film.

PRESS
Medium 04.07.20 - “Directors You Should Know”
”Jono Mitchell makes movies like a modern-day John Hughes — if John Hughes were gay, loved pop music, and made the most poignant and hilarious films about self-love and identity out there.”
WABE 90.1/NPR 04.08.19 - “Atlanta Film ‘Pageant Material’ Puts Twist On Cinderella Story”
“I really wanted to showcase the idea of queer joy versus queer pain. A queer character is just like everyone else. What makes Rodney different in the eyes of his heterosexual counterparts is largely what makes him the same. We all have dreams, we all want to follow them, we all have a right to.”
Georgia Public Broadcast 03.21.19 - "Indie Filmmaker Series: Jonothon Mitchell” “I want people to understand that queer narratives are not uniquely queer. We can relate to them. The stories we tell as queer individuals are just as special and just as important as stories you see from non-queer individuals.”
Matthew's Place 08.24.18 - "#IanInterviews: Dear Jono of Adult Swim"
"Your hard work isn’t fully paying off unless your wheels occasionally need to be greased. Challenges exist to make you strong. They exist to make you a better person and we should always remember that we are not defined by our challenges, but rather by how we respond to them."
